Minimize Extra Revving
Although you might enjoy the sound and thrill of it all, avoid extra revving. Each time you rev your engine up, you cause it to work harder, ultimately causing it to burn more fuel. Instead of revving, take your time when changing gears to minimize engine effort and the amount of fuel you are burning. Let everyone else show off by revving their engine while you save your money by using less fuel.
Follow The Speed Limit
Always follow the speed limit. When you exceed the speed limit, you're more likely to also burn more fuel. Generally, once your speed exceeds 55 miles per hour, your fuel efficiency starts to decline considerably. Similar to engine revving, the faster you travel, the harder your engine has to work and the more fuel your engine will consume. When traveling on the highway, follow the speed limit and try to keep your speed as close to 55 miles per hour as you can.
Turn The Vehicle Off
Make it a habit to turn off the vehicle, rather than letting it sit in an idle state when not in motion. For example, when you forget something and decide to run back into the house to grab it, turn off your vehicle. Think of this in the same way that you would leaving the television on when no one is home – you are still wasting electricity. When you leave your vehicle on, you're still wasting fuel, so just turn it off.
Keep A Safe Distance
Always keep a safe distance away from the vehicle in front of you. This isn't just important from a safety standpoint, but it also can help you save fuel because it limits the frequency at which you must apply the brake. Excessive braking also leads to more frequent acceleration, which also burns more fuel. The further the distance between you and the other vehicle, the less you have to stop.
